Busy at the boat

If you haven't had a chance - look over at the Sailing Blog.

Rainy day!

We had planned to scurry to the boat after work.....only to be thwarted by late afternoon thundershowers!  We had flown to work (I know, such a hard life!) - and had to wait out several severe storms to be able to even make it back to the house!

But, we chased a rainbow all the way back to Eagles Landing!

1915 Sewing Machine

Early this week we went west.....first to Teresa and Rafe's new house near Concord.....but I didn't take a single photo there!  I am really falling down on the job!  Good time and good visit, though!

I did finally remember to snap a photo of Mom's back yard...pretty!

After Teresa & Rafe's we drove up to have a nice lunch with Granny and Cordy.  Forgot to take photos there too!!!!  But also had a nice visit with them - they're doing and looking great!

The real purpose of the trip was to pick up Grandma's old sewing machine.  Isn't it cool?  It will need a good bit of work to restore it.  I did not know the history of it - mom told me that it was originally purchased before Grandma was born by our Great-Grandma.  How need to keep a piece of family history.

The cabinet is in pretty rough shape in places.  We'll have to research how to proceed.  But all the pieces are there - including the original accessory box.

And we also picked up her old cedar chest.   Mom researched it also - it's  from 1933.  The exterior is pretty rough - some leg pieces are missing and the lid has peeling veneer.

But the inside is beautiful!

Father's Day

The kids came over for lunch on Father's Day....fun time!

A bit of "one handed pool".....they agreed to used just one hand to shoot.  Silly!

And since it was about 100 degrees out...they really enjoyed a quick dip in Pat and Diane's pool.  Thanks P & D!    :-)

EAA 1114 Picnic

The yearly EAA Chapter 1114 picnic was yesterday....and we happened to be in town! We miss alot of these meeting just because we don't seem to be around.
Great day for a picnic - only 89 degrees and sunny! Lots of yummy food....
And caught up with a couple of folks we hadn't seen in a while! Fun afternoon!

Pretty flowers

We're taking care of the "airport neighbors" cats for a few weeks at their house.  They have beautiful flowers in their yard and told me that I'm welcome to take any that I want since they won't be there to enjoy.

Today, I visited the kitties - and clipped a few flowers.  There are thousands more....pretty!

Asheboro Airport Fly-in and Flash Fire Jet Truck

Yesterday was the annual NC Aviation Museum fly-in at the Asheboro Airport. Very good day - but very warm!

Our flight instructors gave $99 introductory flights - they stayed busy and very warm! Here a young man is taking his first flight and his parents are there to share the enjoyment.

One of the big draws this year was the "Flash Fire Jet Truck".  They were hired to make 2 runs down the runway at 300+ mph.  The little Chevy pickup is mostly just a big jet engine with a vaguely pick-up truck looking facade.

It was fun to watch - I took this shaky video near the runway.  (The runway was closed at the time, if you're wondering!)   Watch for the vintage Twin Beech who races the truck down the runway!

Biking!

To continue the fitness kick - we took the bikes back to the Shearon Harris park.

This time, we spent a difficult couple of hours on their mountain bike trail.

Different view of the cooling tower.

Lovely woods - but the trail was full of roots and hills!  Whew!

Stopped by a pond - peaceful.   I'm tired....

Hiking at Shearon Harris Park

Well, we're apparently on a fitness jig right now!! Another day of hiking - this time at the lovely Shearon Harris power plant. Progress Energy had donated a sizable tract of land for this park many years ago. I didn't realize how nice it was!

This pretty pond was early in the 5 mile route.  (weird effects on this photo....but I thought it was cool anyway).

About 1/2 way around the loop, we could clearly see the cooling tower across the lake.

Another pretty pond.  There was a family, the Wombles, who owned the land from the early 1800's.  There are some ruins and several of the pretty ponds were their farm ponds.  A pretty walk on a warm day!

Even more hiking!

Today, we went to the new Pittsboro Frisbee Golf course to hike.....just because it is shady and close-by....

A little hard to see, but the "goal" is a yellow rimmed structure in the middle of the photo.  No-one was playing the game - so we had the entire 18 "holes" to ourselves.

There is also a nice playground....again, no-one there.  And since they have a short "zip-line"....I had to give it a try....

Hopped on a little seat....made for kiddos, I'm sure....

And off I zipped!

This would have been a great park to take the kids when they were toddlers!

More Hiking

We're having fun with our extra time lately.  Yesterday we drove down to Lillington to Raven Rock state park for some hiking.

Beautiful day - only about 85 degrees.  Followed shady trails down to the Cape Fear River.

Remains of a very old rock dam/lock (according to the trail map....I would have never known just by glancing at these piles of rocks).

We found a fallen tree to allow us across a stream to jump from one side of the park to the other!  Duane went first to make sure it was safe on the other side!

And on that side of the park, we hiked to Lanier Falls....really just some big rapids.  But pretty nonetheless!

National Doughnut Day

I ran in to Walmart this morning on my way to work to pick up a couple of items.  I was happily greeted at the door by a gloved man....offering a free doughnut to celebrate National Doughnut Day....

I have no idea if it's a "real" day - or if they just made it up.

Regardless, run to your nearest Walmart and get one!

Sad news

I don't often put sad news on the blog.....since there's not much to be sad about in my world......

But today, I feel compelled to do so.  Yesterday was the first fatal crash we've had at the Siler City Airport in the 19 years I've been there.

A nice lady and her husband crashed their Bonanza just short of the runway.  She perished and he is at UNC hospital recovering now from serious injuries.  Rain/fog was approaching the airport at the same time as they were trying to land.  On their second attempt to land, they overshot their approach and hit some trees near the runway.  Fred was in the left seat, but like Duane & I....they were a flying team.

She was a CFI and a member of the EAA and the 99's (Women's pilot association).

Goodbye Barbara and we wish peace for her husband Fred.

Little trip to Richmond, VA

Off to Richmond, VA.....driving because our airplane is in the shop for annual.    See, Janet???? What I have to put up with while I wait for the airplane to be finished. (Just kidding, of course.....we had to take the truck to haul the goods back anyway!!)

Cool building we've seen on I-95 before. I hurriedly snapped a photo as we went by.

Better photo I pulled from the internet!  Love cool old buildings!

Stay tuned to the sailing blog. I'll tell you all about it later!
