37 - Hawaii

I wanted to do a "ridge" walk - which means climb to the top of a mountain so that you can see off both sides!

We chose the Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail.  The trail starts at the end of a subdivision street.   It is about 5 miles round trip and gains about 1800 feet.

The trail was pleasant to start....

But quickly got steep!

The terrain changed as we climbed.

There were several areas like this that the trail was over this network of roots.  Hard to walk!

The views were beautiful - but a bit hazy.

This is the very top of the ridge looking out the "other" side of the mountain top.  The red-clay is a cliff-edge that I'm standing on.  It's a sheer drop off directly below.

Unfortunately, the haze made this photo not so spectacular....but the view was really nice.  An added bonus was that it was very breezy at the top - a welcome cool-off!

View in the other direction from the top.

The trail took us almost 4 hours!  My Garmin watch says that I burned over 1300 calories!

By the time we got back to the car, we were very tired!  We drove a few miles to Sandy Beach Park and planted ourselves again in our beach chairs with the umbrella shielding us from the sun.

It was nice to relax and watch some surfers.  Read a little on our Kindles....napped a little.  That's it for today!

That sure looks like a rugged climb. Views worth it though. After all that "calorie burn", I hope you enjoyed a nice dinner. MOM
