Bathroom tile update

After we upgraded our master bath sink/vanity, the bathroom itself just screams "update me too!!!" I love our double-shower/bathtub combo....but the "dusty rose" tile from 1995 are just not very stylish now...

So, we're going to install new tile!  Just replacing the colored tiles...leaving the plain bone tile in place.

First step is to "rough up" the existing tile.   Since the tile is in good shape, we can install new tile directly over the existing tile.

Next, we start laying out the tile in order to be able to cut all the angled/curved pieces.

Everything cut except the drain hole....I'll do that tomorrow!!

Visit to New Bern

Carolyn and Ceil invited us down for a visit to their New Bern "River House".

We flew in our airplane, Dick & Lindy flew in theirs.  Their house is only a mile or so from the New Bern airport.  After a yummy lunch, we headed out to their dock.  Cecil needed to get his boat off the dock to protect it from the impending Hurricane (Matthew)!!   So, he volunteered to take us for a little spin down the Trent River.

Capt'n Cecil.

Fun boat - the water was just a little choppy.   We tootled up the river - very nice houses (some close to castles!! - like the one belonging to the author Nicholas Sparks.)

Relaxing on the boat.

Then it was time to help put the boat on the trailer and get it out of harm's way.

The "girls" climbed in the back of the pickup for a short ride.

And we relaxed back at the house - Lindy is acting a bit silly after bumming some cash$$ from Richard!

The next day, we rode over to downtown New Bern - wandered around the outside of the Tryon Palace.  Neat bit of history there!

And some beautiful gardens!

And then it was time to head home - a fairly smooth flight and an ILS approach into Sanford.  A great time!

Grape and Apple Jelly/Jam

Mom was sweet to bring me some wonderful Concord grapes from a neighbor at her house. They, of course, have seeds and I'm not fond of grapes with seeds. But they taste fabulous!! Time to make some jelly and preserve that wonderful flavor!  And when I was home for Bridget's bridal shower, she gave me some apples from the ancient apple tree in the yard.  (I'm 53 and I always remember that tree, so it must be a pretty old specimen!!)

Just cut up and put in a pot to simmer.

A good while later - nice and mushy.

Put the mixture thru the food mill to remove all the stems and peelings.

Yucky looking!

And here's the result - applesauce and all the peelings to go to compost.

Then I strained the applesauce for hours to render a pretty pinkish juice.

Next up was the grapes - a few were green - I didn't pick them out.  Just washed and put in a pot to simmer.

A little while later - isn't that just beautiful?

I didn't take photos, but I ran that mixture thru the food mill and strained the juice as usual.

So here's what I have to work with - a quart of thick grape juice and a little over a pint of thick applejuice.  I didn't strain it thru cheesecloth because I like my "jelly" to be a little closer to "jam" - in other words, I like little bits of the fruit to still be present.  It just makes the jelly a little "softer" to spread.

Mixed together,  the apple and grape juice heating up.

Seven cups of sugar!!!

A nice rolling boil....and once it's just right...

Ladled into hot, sterile jars.  (Glad mom gave me a grape-jelly colored dish towel at Christmas last year!  No visible stains!)

And I'll tell you - the jelly is some of the tastiest ever!!

10 Year Blog Anniversary!!!

Since my sis mentioned that her blog was 10 years old, I looked to see the date of my first blog-post.

So, happy 10th anniversary to the "World of Karen" also!!  Fun way to keep in touch!
